Don't leave your chimney open to the elements
Is your chimney pot open to the elements?
Most homeowners rarely look at the top of their chimney. An open pot can let in all of the below. A suitable guard or cowl can help reduce these problems — the right one depends on your flue and appliance.
Birds & crows
Birds may enter open chimney pots and try to set up nests.
Nesting materials
Twigs and nesting material can build up inside the flue.
Rain & water
Rain falls straight into an exposed chimney opening.
Debris
Leaves and other material can fall into the flue and fireplace.
Take a look outside
What is sitting on top of your chimney?
On the left, an open terracotta pot: nothing stops birds dropping in twigs or rain running straight down. On the right, the same pot with an Allgrip Crow Guard — steel legs grip inside the pot and a flat top cover sits above, keeping large birds out while letting the chimney breathe.
Step outside, look up, and take a photo. We'll tell you what we see.

Other chimney cowl options
Different problems need different products. We don't automatically recommend a crow guard for a working stove or solid-fuel flue — we check how your chimney is used first.
